Crete is the largest island in Greece,the east-west axis is 260km and in width from12-60km.


Heraklion town is the capital of the island with the biggest port on the island and the biggest airport (with the name Nikos Kazantzakis).

Rethymnon is west of the island about 1 hour by bus from Heraklion,

Chania also is west of the island after Rethymnon about 2 hours (by bus) from Heraklion,

Agios Nikolaos is east of the island about 1 hour (by bus) from Heraklion,

Sitia is eastern after Agios Nikolaos about 2 hours (by bus) from Heraklion.


In the years 3000 BC-1400 BC flourished on the island the Minoan civilization, one of the first civilizations in Europe, with major centers of Knossos, Cydonia and Phaistos.

Venetians consolidate their domination on the island in 1204 AD -1669AD.

Turks consolidate their domination on the island in 1669AD -1898AD.

The highest mountain of Crete is Psiloritis(2.456m high) and it is located in Rethymnon regional unit.

The most famous gorge is Samaria Gorge (18km long)one of the main sights of Crete.

The largest natural lake is Kournas(Rethymnon regional unit).

The most famous caves is Ideon Antron(Rethymnon regional unit),

Diktaion Antron(Lasithi regional unit).

The most famous  rivers is Anapodiaris,Aposelemis and Almiros.
